AUTHORS NOTE:
I’ve always loved magic items especially the weird stuff, the items that make you think, the ones that feel like they have a story, a past, or maybe even a mind of their own, the kind of treasures that don’t just help you win a fight but change how you play the game entirely, and that’s what this book is really about. I still remember when I first learned how to play AD&D in 1981 from two of my school friends, Ronald and Keith; they were telling me about their adventures, and at one point they mentioned that when they played Tomb of Horrors, they used a magical shovel to dig their way out of pit traps, and of course we were just kids—barely scratching the surface of how that dungeon was actually meant to work—but at the time I thought it was the funniest thing in the world, a magic item that just let you bypass the danger entirely, and that idea wasn’t “correct,” but it was creative, and it showed me something important: magic items weren’t just gear—they were solutions, shortcuts, and sometimes outright chaos. That early moment, combined with the legendary creativity of Gary Gygax, really cemented my love for magic items, because of artifacts and relics like the Hand of Vecna and Eye of Vecna weren’t just powerful—they were dangerous, mysterious, and unforgettable, and neither was the Soul Gem from Ghost Tower of Inverness by Allen Hammack, or the iconic weapons Wave, Whelm and Blackrazor from White Plume Mountain by Lawrence Schick—items that didn’t just sit on a character sheet but shaped the entire adventure around them, and that’s the spirit I wanted to capture, even if just a smidgeon of it, here. Fun fact, I put in homage artwork to my little black cat Merlin who passed away in 2024 from cancer at the age of 13, most specifically the cover art of the 1E book and the Necklace of the Bound Familiar artwork were drawn specifically from his photos. Also in this book I’ve split items into two categories—Magical and Mystical—where Magical items are your classic, reliable tools, the stuff you expect in a fantasy world, solid, dependable, and useful. Mystical items are something else entirely, unpredictable, sometimes dangerous, sometimes strange, and often tied to deeper forces that don’t fully explain themselves. Use these however you want, drop them into your campaigns, twist them to fit your world, or change them entirely, because no two groups will use these the same way and that’s exactly how it should be, and at the end of the day this book isn’t just about magic items—it’s about giving you tools to create memorable, enjoyable moments you and your players won’t forget. — Mark Taormino, Dark Wizard Games™
