Description

Within the broken mountains on the Northwestern Steppes of the Valley of the Moon lies a series of caves unlike any other—a place not ruled by darkness… but by dysfunction. Within these twisting tunnels, a ragtag band of Orcs, Goblins, Kobolds, and Bugbears have formed a fragile and unstable alliance known as the “Council of Chaos.” Bound together by greed, paranoia, and a shared hatred of all outsiders, these creatures attempt—feebly—to coexist under a single, crumbling pact. Arguments erupt into bloodshed over stolen rations, tribal rivalries and accusations of betrayal echo through the tunnels. Lurking somewhere in the depths, something far more sinister is pulling the strings… The caverns are a powder keg. All it needs is a spark. Now a band of rogue adventurers has stumbled into the chaos. Will they unite the monsters and restore order or ignite the fuse, watch it all burn… and loot what remains of the Caverns of the Chaotic Ones!

AUTHORS NOTE:

Caverns of the Chaotic Ones was conceptualized from the simple premise: What happens when all the monsters in a dungeon don’t want to work together… but are forced to anyway? This adventure is both a homage and a tongue-in-cheek parody of the classic Caves of Chaos—one of the most iconic dungeon setups in fantasy roleplaying history by the genius mind of Gary Gygax! Like many Dungeon Masters from the 1980s, I’ve always loved the idea of multiple monster factions packed into a single location… even if, logically, to many folks it never quite made sense. To me I just thought it’s a fantasy game, so I embraced it. The “Council of Chaos” is what happens when those factions actually try to coexist—and fail spectacularly. Orcs, Gnolls, Kobolds, and Bugbears aren’t working together because they want to… they’re doing it because something has forced them into a fragile, miserable alliance that’s already cracking at the seams. Every grudge matters. Every insult lingers. Every bad decision pushes the dungeon closer to collapse.

This is not a well-ordered dungeon—it’s a disaster waiting to happen. You can absolutely run this as a classic hack-and-slash crawl, and it will deliver that old-school brutality. But the real magic—the Maximum Mayhem—comes when players realize they don’t have to fight everything at once. They can manipulate it. Spread a rumor. Frame a rival tribe. Break a treaty at just the right moment. Watch the dungeon tear itself apart. This module is designed to be flexible, reactive, and alive. The monsters are not just encounters—they are volatile personalities, desperate factions, and walking powder kegs. Whether your players bring unity to the madness or reduce it to ashes, the outcome is entirely in their hands. So consider this adventure a love letter to the classics… with a wicked grin and a lit torch… or a well placed fireball spell!
